#21. Jurassic Park (1993) review
Released in 1993, along with Steven Speilberg's other classic, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park shocked people across the world and began the CGI craze that we have today. To think that a movie released in 1993 has better CGI than a movie released in the 2010's is something to be ashamed of! Jurassic Park is the measuring scale for CGI that movies hold nowadays yet very few near it on a scale.
A rich millionaire creates himself a dinosaur park called Jurassic Park where the DNA of mosquitos who once fed on dinosaurs have been extracted to create dinosaurs. One day, whilst several archeologists have a tour of the park, a major security breach causes all the dinosaurs in the park to roam wildly, soon becoming a game of survival!
Steven Speilberg's legendary directing and writing are clearly evident in this film as the action of the film does not start until over a good hour into the film, yet to keep everyone's interest to the film for such a long time is truly amazing! The story keeps you so interested and so captivated for over an hour as Steven Speilberg is able to cleverly explain the process of creating dinosaurs. That scene was one of the best in the film as it went right back to the basics of film making, depicting the extraction of DNA on a cartoon show.
Reviewing Jurassic Park is a definite failure without being able to mention John Williams. Williams is able to create a score, that is so legendary and so amazing once more, displaying his mastery of music. Getting immersed into a film like this with Speilberg's direction is definitely easy, but add John Williams' musical score and it just becomes a whole lot easier!
As the action finally begins in the movie, it becomes a good hour of solid, edge of your seat entertaining providing some of the most intense sequences ever put to film, such as the iconic T-Rex scene involving John Hammond's grandchildren is one of the most intense sequences ever put to film and is simultaneously, one of the best!
Not only is the story interesting and the effects groundbreaking and visually stunning, even to this day, but the characters are such interesting and actually do possess the traits of humans. Speilberg makes sure that he doesn't get sloppy in writing his characters when he has managed to create such an amazing world. His characters are as great as the world he creates, something which his good buddy, George Lucas failed to do with the awful Star Wars prequels!
John Hammond, being the owner and creator of the park, requires the approval of a few archeologists to get the thumbs up in order to endorse the park, so he then summons Grant, Ellie and the greatest character of the film, Malcolm! John Hammond is mostly a great character but something that has always given me the skin irritation is how he at time, completely forgets that his two grandchildren are out in the park, in danger. At certain points, he completely forgets this and doesn't do anything which isn't the perfect grandfather role model! That said, he is great and Richard Attenborough plays him very well. Sam Neil and Laura Dern give good performances as Grant and Ellie but the scene stealer of the film, is Jeff Goldblum! He is the star of the show and provides "light, even in the darkest of times!" Galaldriel's gift to Frodo, in the Lord of the Rings was the Light of Elendil which will give light in dark places. In this case, the Light of Elendil of this film is Malcolm! There is also another appearance in the film and that is someone who isn't referred to enough. Samuel L Jackson as Arnold! He was great and it is definitely interesting to see where Jackson was before Pulp Fiction, which came out a year after!
Jurassic Park is one of the greatest family, adventure films ever made and is easily one of the most revolutionary films of all time, going where no film had ever gone before...All the way back, 65 million years ago! Visually stunning to this day, Jurassic Park has far more to offer than just eye candy! It is an amazingly written and directed film by master filmmaker, Steven Speilberg, has an engaging story and amazing action sequences, an iconic soundtrack and has fantastic characters. Much like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park is the perfect adventure film!
Grade- A+
