However, does it truly succeed in building up to the Incredible Hulk or does it simply fail?

Scientist Bruce Banner conducts experiments from the military and a horribly gone wrong experiment turns him into a green monster when he angers up. Fleeing from the government, Bruce Banner attempts to find a way to cure himself and when he finally does, he meets his former lover and must clash with the Government forces, including a new and more powerful bad guy of himself.

Whilst better than Ang Lee's Hulk, The Incredible Hulk is still a disappointing film in some ways. The story is generally interesting but there never seems to have a moment in the film that changes the storyline for the viewer's pleasure. Whilst some great character moments and some great stuff at the beginning of the film, by the end it all feels like a giant CGI mess. Edward Norton is absolutely terrific in the role of Bruce Banner and shares great chemistry with Liv Tyler's character, Betty. Many would remember Tim Roth from Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and is fantastic for such a film but in this more kiddish comic book film, I didn't enjoy it as much. It's definitely a good performance but he truly belongs in an R rated film. His performance is good but I didn't find his performance appealing like in Tarantino's first two films.

Despite saying that the film feels like a CGI mess, the film does have some good effects and some enjoyability. The action sequences are entertaining enough, some great story elements such as the backstory to Bruce Banner and his struggle and pain. That element was done fantastically well in the film but there were also the over the top cheesy elements, which I understand given that it is merely a comic book film. The final conflict with the Abomination vs Hulk was really cheesy and I was completely drawn out of it by then. I enjoyed seeing the two smashing through but the fight itself, couldn't keep me engaged. It felt far too CGI sloppy by then.

The direction in the film was great early on, dropped as the film progressed and the end felt truly poor. Nothing in the film was horrible but at the same time, nothing in the film was amazing like in other comic book films such as Iron Man. Despite a decent comic book film, The Avengers build up didn't quite exactly start the way it was supposed to.

Grade- 6.5/10
